Discussion:
Kalmaegi made landfall in southern Vietnam at around 1100 UTC with winds of 110 kts. The typhoon has very quickly made its way inland and the center is now close to the Vietnam-Cambodia border. Its structure has very quickly unraveled, with the convection beginning to race ahead of the low-level circulation center. This is due to a sharp increase in shear which has caused Kalmaegi’s mid- and low-level circulations to decouple. The intensity is lowered to a potentially generous 80 kts, based on expected decay from the 110 kt landfall intensity.
Kalmaegi should continue to weaken rapidly as it moves west-northwestward over rugged terrain and into even stronger shear during the next 24 hours or so. The surface circulation will likely decay into a trough over eastern Thailand by Friday evening.
