Discussion:

Satellite and radar imagery indicates that the eye of Kajiki made landfall in north central Vietnam south of Vinh at around 0700 UTC, with an intensity of 90 kts. Since landfall, Kajiki’s structure remains fairly intact, although the eye has become cloud-filled and less distinct and dry air has infiltrated the circulation to the north of the center. The typhoon continues to produce intense convection mainly to the south of the center, organized into discrete bands with impressive radial outflow. Given that Kajiki’s structure really has not decayed very much, the intensity is lowered to a potentially generous 80 kts.

Although Kajiki has managed to maintain its structure up to now, it will soon be passing over much more rugged terrain. This should significantly disrupt the typhoon’s structure and lead to even more rapid weakening during the next day or two. Kajiki should weaken to a tropical storm within the next few hours, and a tropical depression on Tuesday. Most of the available model guidance shows Kajiki decaying into a trough over northern Thailand by Tuesday evening.
