Current storm information:

  • Position: 18.4°N 107.2°E

  • Movement: WNW at 10 knots (20 km/h)

  • Intensity: 90 knots (165 km/h) [Cat 2]

Watches and warnings:

  • There are no land-based watches or warnings in effect.

Hazards affecting land:

  • Kajiki is continuing to produce typhoon conditions along the southwestern coast of Hainan Island. Extremely dangerous and life-threatening typhoon conditions are expected to occur in portions of north and central Vietnam later today. Heavy rain and damaging winds are likely, and the rainfall could cause severe flooding. This rainfall will spread inland over Vietnam and into Laos and Thailand through midweek. All preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion. For additional information and warnings, refer to products from your local weather office.

Discussion:

WSFM MWI 37GHz microwave satellite image

Kajiki appears to be undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle. Hours after the previous advisory, Kajiki’s inner core became significantly disrupted with concentric eyewalls developing. The inner eyewall is currently in the process of breaking down, and although the eye is still somewhat distinct on satellite imagery, radar data suggests the inner eyewall has filled in and is collapsing, with a much larger outer eyewall and moat surrounding it. This may also be associated with the dry air that had entrained into the circulation earlier. The intensity is adjusted down to 90 kts, based on consensus T5.0 Dvorak fixes, although CIMSS ADT and D-PRINT estimates are lower.

Kajiki is about 6 to 8 hours away from making landfall in Vietnam near Vinh. Although the environment is favorable for strengthening, Kajiki’s current structure argues against any significant changes in strength prior to landfall. After landfall, Kajiki should weaken rapidly as it pushes inland, although it is likely to pose an extremely dangerous flooding threat to portions of Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand through midweek, even after the circulation dissipates.
