Discussion:

GCOM-W1 AMSR2 89GHz microwave satellite image
Mitag has continued to get better organized as it approaches China. The storm’s central dense overcast has expanded and become more symmetric, and microwave satellite imagery and radar data from Hong Kong indicates that an eye feature is present, although the eye is not yet discernible on conventional satellite imagery. Given how quickly Mitag’s structure has improved, Dvorak estimates range from T3.0 to T3.5, with slightly lower CIMSS ADT and D-PRINT estimates. A blend of all of these yields an intensity of 45 kts.
Mitag is just a few hours away from making landfall just east of Hong Kong. Although it isn’t reflected in the forecast positions below, Mitag could gain a little bit more strength before then. Once Mitag makes landfall, interaction with rough terrain should rapidly weaken the system, and it will likely dissipate outright on Saturday.
