Discussion:

Himawari-9 infrared satellite image (Weathernerds)

Kajiki continues to have a fairly well defined circulation despite crossing rugged terrain in northern Vietnam and Laos. However, the circulation has begun to leave the convection behind, as most of the convection associated with Kajiki is well east of the center along the coast. This convection is still quite intense, however, likely due to inflow from the Gulf of Thailand and Bay of Bengal. The center itself is embedded in continental dry air filtering in from the north. Scatterometer data indicates that winds of 35 to 40 kts are still occurring over the far western Gulf of Tonkin, so the intensity is set to 35 kts assuming some decay from the time of the Oceansat-3 pass.

Despite Kajiki’s low-level circulation remaining well defined, it will soon be moving over even more rugged terrain, and this should cause more substantial disruption. Kajiki should weaken to a tropical depression later today, and the circulation should dissipate outright near the Thailand-Myanmar border tonight or Wednesday.
