Watches and warnings:

  • No. 3 Storm Signal (HKO/SMG): Hong Kong and Macau

Hazards affecting land:

  • Mitag will likely produce areas of heavy rain and gusty winds along the southern coast of China, including Hong Kong and Macau during the next day or two.

Discussion:

Mitag made landfall in southeastern China just to the east of Hong Kong at around 0350 UTC at an intensity of 45 kts. Since then, its convection has diminished quite rapidly, although it still has a fairly well-defined inner core with a small area of intense convection located just to the north and northwest of the center. The circulation is also still fairly well defined just to the north of Hong Kong and is discernible on local radar imagery. Although Mitag is still decently well organized for being inland, there have been no recent reports of tropical storm force winds since about 0550 UTC, and so Mitag is now a tropical depression with winds of 30 kts.

Mitag has entered an area of weak steering currents, and the tropical cyclone appears likely to slow down and begin to perform a broad cyclonic loop over southeastern China during the next day or so. Rough terrain and gradually increasing shear should make quick work of Mitag’s small circulation, and most of the available model guidance dissipates the system within the next 24 hours or so.

Since I need to devote more attention to Ragasa and Neoguri, and Mitag is expected to dissipate soon, this is the last advisory on Mitag. For additional information, refer to products from your local weather office.
