Focus on Central Virginia - Week of 9/29/25
An unsettled start to the week will give way to sunny skies and seasonable temperatures. Tropical Storm Imelda won't be a threat, and you might want to have a sweater or light jacket handy later this week!
Weather Headlines for Central Virginia:
Humberto & Imelda’s Tropical Tango — Tropical Storm Imelda is currently intensifying over the northern Bahamas, and it is forecast to become a hurricane tomorrow. However, Imelda will interact with the much stronger Hurricane Humberto in the central Atlantic and be drawn out to sea, and it won’t impact our weather in any way other than some clouds and showers today and tomorrow.
Actual, Actual Fall — After Imelda moves out to sea on Tuesday, strong Canadian high pressure will build in from the north and bring sunny skies and our coolest, most fall-like weather yet, with low temperatures in the upper 40s possible late this week! Better grab a sweater or light jacket! We warm back up a bit over the weekend.

In Depth:
The biggest story weatherwise this week is Tropical Storm Imelda, which is currently intensifying over the western Atlantic and the northern Bahamas. Ordinarily, a storm in this location would be a serious issue for us since tropical cyclones in this location typically track up the coast this weekend. However, powerful Category 4 Hurricane Humberto will serve to protect the region from any direct impacts from Imelda. Very strong surface inflow will serve to draw Imelda away from the coast in what is called the Fujiwhara Effect, and this effect will increase as Imelda intensifies. The result? Other than some clouds and occasional showers as a result of a frontal boundary drawing tropical moisture up from Imelda, Imelda will not have any major effects on our weather.
Instead, cloud cover from the tropical moisture moving over the area will keep temperatures low and bring chances of scattered showers today and tomorrow. High temperatures today and tomorrow will be in the low to mid 70s, with lows in the mid 60s. The rain and clouds will move out quickly on Tuesday night as Imelda heads out to sea and high pressure builds in behind it.

National Weather Service high temperature forecast for Wednesday 10/1. Highs in the low 70s across the entire area.

National Weather Service high temperature forecast for Thursday 10/2. Highs around 70 across the entire area.
Who’s ready for actual, actual fall? It’s coming, and it’s coming fast as high pressure builds in Tuesday night into Wednesday. The skies will clear overnight and Wednesday will be a very pleasant day with sunny skies, low humidity, and temperatures in the low to mid 70s. Thursday morning, meanwhile…

National Weather Service low temperature forecast for Thursday 10/2. Low temperatures in the mid to upper 40s across the area, warmer near the beaches.
…better wear a sweater or light jacket because it will be chilly! Morning temperatures on Thursday will be in the mid to upper 40s along and west of I-95! It’ll still be sunny, but very mild with high temperatures in the upper 60s to around 70 across much of the area on both Thursday and Friday. The pleasant weather will persist through the weekend, although we should start to warm up by Sunday and early indications are we could be back in the low 80s early next week.
