Focus on Central Virginia - 10/8 to 10/13/25
Warm and humid weather gives way to much, MUCH cooler conditions for the end of the week, but this weekend looks to be blustery and rainy as an early-season coastal low moves past the area.
Weather Headlines for Central Virginia:
Big Cooldown — Today will be warm and humid, but a strong cold front will push through this afternoon and bring much cooler weather behind it as Canadian high pressure builds in. Parts of the Piedmont could see patchy frost on Friday morning.
Early Season Nor’easter — A deep coastal low will approach the area over the weekend. This low is not expected to be a tropical system, but it could bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region, especially on Sunday. Winds at the beaches and in the Outer Banks could approach hurricane force, and heavy surf, life-threatening rip currents, and coastal flooding will be major concerns.

National Weather Service high temperature forecast for Wednesday 10/8. Highs generally in the upper 70s to around 80, with low 80s in Southside Virginia and eastern North Carolina.
In Depth:
A strong cold front is approaching the area from the northwest, and this front brought some gusty winds and rain showers to parts of Virginia overnight. Ahead of this front, temperatures will soar into the upper 70s to lower 80s across the area, and humidity will be fairly high. The front should pass through the region this afternoon - after it does, we should see clearer skies but strong, gusty winds out of the north to northeast. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph in some spots. The humidity should also drop and temperatures will crash after sunset, with lows dropping into the upper 40s in many spots.

National Weather Service low temperature forecast for Thursday morning 10/9. Low temperatures along and west of I-95 in the upper 40s to around 50, with warmer temperatures near the beaches.

National Weather Service high temperature forecast for Thursday 10/9. Highs generally in the mid to upper 60s across the region.
Thursday will be the coolest day we’ve had in quite a while - sunny skies, gusty north to northeasterly winds (gusts as high as 25 mph), and temperatures in the mid 60s across the area! However, the bigger story will be overnight - temperatures will drop to the low 40s near Richmond, with some upper 30s possible in the eastern Piedmont. This could result in some patchy frost overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

National Weather Service low temperature forecast for Friday morning 10/10. Temperatures in the upper 30s to around 40 north and west of Richmond, in the low to mid 40s in the Richmond area, and in the upper 40s to around 50 south and east of Richmond.
This weekend will be quite a bit more unsettled as an early-season nor’easter/coastal low will move up the East Coast. This low is not expected to be a tropical cyclone, but it is still likely to be quite dangerous. Although most of the rainfall associated with the system will remain over the eastern portion of the region, the low will bring gusty winds to much of the area, with the worst of the weather likely to happen on Sunday. Very strong winds are likely at the beaches, and winds could approach hurricane force at the Outer Banks and on the Eastern Shore. Even in the Richmond area, sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts are possible, and these winds could result in widespread power outages. At the coast, heavy surf and life-threatening rip currents are likely. Conditions should improve on Monday as the system moves away from the area.

Animation of the 06Z GFS from 72 to 120 hours, showing a strong coastal low moving up the mid-Atlantic coast, with heavy rain likely over eastern Virginia on Sunday and Monday.
